How
To Improve Team Morale
By Dennis Sommer (www.dennissommer.com)
Morale is vital to your team and organization. During
weak economic times, poor morale can be the catalyst for
disaster. We provide a list of proven techniques to improve
team morale within your organization.
1. Have a team lunch. It does not have to be at a fancy
restaurant. Ordering pizza or sandwiches can be just and
fun and gives your staff a chance to relax.
2. Designate one bulletin board or cubical wall as a
place to post cartoons, jokes, humorous photos, etc.
3. Attach a cartoon or short joke to the more mundane
memos you distribute to the team.
4. Schedule an office meeting away from the office.
If it is a nice day, meet outside or go to a local park.
5. Hold special days. Have an ugly tie or ugly shirt
day or something similar that everyone can participate
in. Award a joke prize for the winner.
6. Betting pools for events like the Super Bowl, Academy
Awards, Kentucky Derby, NCAA Basketball March Madness,
etc. can generate excitement and are perfectly legal
as long as all the money you collect is distributed.
Beware of your company policy on this activity before
starting.
7. Take turns designating someone to tell a joke or
a story during a daily humor break.
8. Bring a camera to work and get candid shots of employees.
Post the photos on your humor board or wall.
9. Be sure to smile and say hello to your staff. Be
cheerful while walking around your teams.
10. Work out a flex time schedule that allows people
to arrive late or leave early one day every week or
every other week.
11. Remind yourself and your staff that things are not
as bad as they sometimes seem during the stress of the
moment.
